| Math is key to setting career goals |

Mathematics and Science have been my favorite subjects since grade school up to present. I know that many are having a hard time in these subjects but why do I still like it? I am a person who likes to search for the things I’m curious about. I’ll never stop to search until I find the sufficient answer to quench my thirst for facts. Science answers the things that are happening in and around me. For me, I don’t need to memorize that much rather I must understand each topic since Biology, Chemistry and Physics are related to each other. On the other hand, I love math since it’s where I’m good at. I always think that I need to excel in Math to understand other things since in everything, there’s mathematics behind it. I believe that Math is my real strength and Science just comes in second. I am not the best in these subjects but I can still say that I’m competent enough since I have represented NDGM in MTAP competitions (1st year – 4th year except 3rd year). I have had constantly high marks in Math throughout my high school years. Sometimes, I even get superior or excellent results in Math and Science diagnostic tests. There’s just one weird thing in me and that is when I’m happier and more excited when Math problems get more complicated.Yes, I’m not good in memorizing but in Math and Science, logic is all you need. Every lesson in Math is interconnected to each other. Without one, solving a problem will be harder or even impossible. During my first year, I learned basic Algebra. In 2nd year, we had more advanced lessons linked with the previous ones. In my 3rd year, we learned that solving Geometry problems needs knowledge in Algebra and basic arithmetic. During my 4th year, it’s a mixture of all and Calculus is just like Algebra in a different field. In my view, Mathematics is the most important subject of all. In chemistry and Physics, you need Math in computing problems. In creating computer programs, you need Math. In Economics, you need it also in your computation to end up to a conclusion. I think this is enough to prove that Math is the basis of all subjects. I even made a quote relating Math to love. "My love for you is like the limit of a constant over a variable as the variable approaches zero which is infinity.” (Video from youtube.com; posted by MEImaths 04.06.09) [Note: This article was written by one of the finalists for the Iglesia Science and Technology Award for 2010 at Notre Dame of Manila.] |
