Text language OK but let's not forget the grammar

The Philippines has emerged as one of the texting capitals of the world. And of course, in texting, text language (or SMS language, textspeak, or textese) is used.

Indeed, in almost every corner and in practically every walk of life, the ubiquitous cell phone has become one of life's basic accessories. And then there is the requisite SIM card or cell phone load for mobile phones so that one can text friends and family.

Through time, we have seen the evolution of SMS language or text language that often includes phonetically-derived abbreviations (including those for instant messaging or IM) and emoticons. Most shortcuts aim to save time in typing the keystrokes and space on the phone screen and often reflect the local experience. For example, simply K means OK, u means you, btw for by the way, etc. The key thing is that texters, especially kids, do not forget proper use of the language (eg, grammar and spelling) whether it be in English, Pilipino (or Tagalog), Cebuano, Ilocano, or any other dialect. And of course, judicious allocation of resources must be exercised so that priorities can be maintained (ie, it does not have to come down to a choice of load vs. food in certain instances).

The power of texting has been demonstrated in contests such as in American Idol and also in promoting certain songs such as those by popular Fil-Hispano balladeer Josh Santana. But the most precious value of text language is being the mechanism for affordable yet timely communication link and connection among Pinoys both inside the Philippines and abroad.
