A former sub-province of Leyte, Biliran became a full-pledged Philippine province in 1992. Although among the country's smallest provinces, Biliran has a lot to offer in terms of its fishing industry (both offshore and in fishponds for prawns, shrimps, and milkfish), beautiful beaches, and the idyllic way of life so elusive to find in these days of urban sprawl.

Biliran has 8 municipalities, most of which are found in Biliran island, including Naval the capital, Biliran, Caibiran, and the island town of Maripipi.
