The rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, which include those in Banaue and Batad, are recognized by the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Living Cultural Landscape. The rice terraces have a characteristic amphitheater-like terrain that are interspersed with practically vertical terrace ponds. The Batad and Banaue rice terraces are considered as both historical and modern-day engineering marvels. What makes it more impressive is that the Cordillera (Banaue and Batad) rice terraces were developed by native Filipino farmers long time ago and without the aid of modern machinery.
