| Great idea: Calamansi taste in a bottle! |
|
The Philippine lemon, most commonly referred to as calamansi (or calamondin) occupies a special place in Pinoy cooking. In the West, the calamansi, which looks like a miniature lime, is also known by other names, such as calamondin orange, acid orange, or Panama orange. (Video from youtube.com; posted by KONTRATRAPOE 08.17.08) Over the last decade or so, modern science has provided a means of having a taste of calamansi via a bottle or packaged container - ie, via concentrate or in powdered form. Some of the calamansi concentrate brands in the market include Magnolia calamansi, Citrus Farms Calamansi concentrate, and Soon to be Famous calamansi concentrate. For the powdered calamansi extract, we had the chance to use here in New Jersey a product called HealthFirst, which is manufactured by Global Partners, Inc. in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines. With no preservative, coloring, flavoring, or sugar added, the HealthFirst powdered calamansi extract represents a natural Philippine fruit-based food product that can be used as calamansi juice, as a dip, as a marinade, as a taste or flavor enhancer, or as a tonic drink.
