Retirement living in the Philippines: A more viable move now?
Written by Jojo Iglesia

Deciding on when and where to retire constitute one of the biggest dilemmas for everyone, including Filipinos both local and overseas. In today's world scenario, retirement living in the Philippines appears to be a more viable option.

Lots of factors come into play regarding potential retirement living in the Philippines, including financial state, residential facilities (eg, condos), amenities for sports (eg, golf courses) and leisure, health status and the requisite proximity and standard of health care facilities, and emotional and family ties (eg, grandparents usually want to be with their grandchildren and/or children).

Granted that one is already in that phase of life where big decisions related to retirement have to be made, getting the best information (including up-to-date international travel information) is key. The first decade of the new millenium has highlighted both the positive and negative sides of a "global economy" on top of an aging world population (ie, financial meltdown, credit crunch, mortgage crisis, healthcare burden, etc.). Cost-effectiveness in terms of favorable currency exchange can translate to a comparatively better quality of life in retirement places where the US dollar can still go a long way, such as in the Philippines.

But of course, the financial aspect is just one of the deciding parameters. It all starts with getting the most out your money and living life to the fullest now and in retirement. The Philippines has become known as a retirement paradise or retirement haven especially among expatriates or expats who have "tasted how sweet Philippine life can be".

The best way to assess if the Philippines is truly a retirement haven is to experience it first-hand.  But short of it, there are numerous resources and sources of helpful information on retirement living in the Philippines well, both online and offline.  For more details on the Philippines as a retirement paradise, one may go to authoritative online sites, such as that by the Philippine Retirement Authority.
