Game of the Generals – Revisiting a Filipino-Invented game

In the 1970’s, the late Ronnie Pasola invented the board game – the Game of the Generals,  also called simply as GG or salpakan to afficionadoes and players.  Ronnie Pasola provided the vision for the game and also organized tournaments such as the Game of the Generals Inter-club Annual National Tournament (GGIANT).

Shown is a photo of the trophy won by the Bigat-Isip GG team in one of the game of the generals tournaments in its early years (ie, 1970s).

GG is a board game that where cunning and strategy are essential to victory, akin to that in bridge or poker.  The game of the generals combines the mathematical acumen needed in chess and the analytical skills of combat using pieces ranging from the rank of private to 5-star general, spy, and the flag representing the home fort.  The rules for the game of the generals, a Filipino-invented game that has been played throughout the world, are explained further at Wikipedia.org.
